the way to win

This is for Jon.

As I recall, my favourite way to win is to have rocket roller skates and coat the entire board with timebombs.

oh yeah .... good times.

long live GMG.

What's the difference between the Demo and Standard downloadable versions of Inevitable?

Another popular search term I've noticed is "demo and standard."  I figure that people are a little unclear on the difference between the downloadable free demo version of Inevitable and the paid downloadable standard standard version of Inevitable.  Fortunately, we're here to help clear things up.

There are three big differences between the demo version and the standard version:

  1. The standard version has more playable groups.  The demo version comes with five Group Information Sheets (aka: The Furious Five), and The Clone Police.  The standard version comes with 20 Group Information Sheets and The Clone Police.
  2. The standard version has more FATE cards.  The demo version has 30 FATE cards in the FATE deck.  The standard version has 65 cards in the FATE deck (and a blank FATE card).
  3. As of December 29, 2010, the standard version costs $9.95 and the demo version is free.

The standard version also comes with a few more extras:

  • box art for the front and back of the box, and
  • art to make 21 button pawns.

...and there you have it!

What's the difference between a Group Information Sheet and a Player Data Form?

As of December 21, 2010, several people have searched inevitablethegame.com for Group Information Sheets.  I figure that people either want to download Group Information Sheets, or they're mistaking Group Information Sheets for Personal Data Forms.

A Group Information Sheet is what you get at the beginning of the game.  It tells you what group you're playing, what your special power is, and what your starting statistics are.

A Personal Data Form is what you use to keep track of your progress during play.  At the start of the game, you copy your starting statistics from your Group Information Sheet to your Personal Data Form.

If you're looking to download Group Information Sheets,  they're not available as an independent download.  You'll find them bundled in with all the other files in the Free Demo version (which comes with 5+1 groups) or the Standard version (which comes with 20+1 groups).

If you're looking to download Personal Data Forms, they're available for free in the store.

What is "The Furious Five"?

You may have heard us use the term, "The Furious Five," in posts on the web or in our literature, but you're not sure what the Furious Five is.

The Furious Five is the set of five groups that comes with the Free Demo Version of Inevitable: The Church, The Famous International Playboys, The Living Dead, The Mafia, and The Time Travelers.

Yes, the Free Demo version also comes with The Clone Police, which is a group – but they're not a group you can start the game with.  And, "The Furious Six," just doesn't have the same ring to it.  No, we're not going to change the phrase to, "The Sexy Six," either.

There isn't anything super-special about The Furious Five, other than their inclusion in the Free Demo set.  They're not necessarily the most powerful groups in the game, but they're not weak either.  Really, we selected them because their special powers are easy to grok and represent a pretty broad spectrum of the kinds of special powers in the game. The Church is a die-manipulator, The Famous International Playboys are an income group with a minor immunity, The Living Dead are a combat group with a major immunity/disadvantage.  The Mafia is a combat/income/immunity group, and The Time Travelers are a movement control group.

...and that's it.

I'm having trouble logging in. Help!

Are you having trouble logging in?  That must be frustrating.  Fortunately, we're here to help.

Log in issues fall into one of two categories:  Username issues and password issues.

Let's start with username issues.  Either you don't remember your user name, or you're 100% sure that you're using the right user name and password, but the system insists that you don't exist.  In either case, you have two options: (1) Email us for help/support (info at this website's URL), or (2) create a new user.  I recommend contacting us first. If you've simply forgotten your username, odds are good we'll be able to track it down for you.  If your account has been deleted, we'll be able to confirm that for you.  (On that note: There was a little burst of spam account creators a while back, and I deleted a bunch of accounts that looked "fake."  If I deleted your account in that purge, I sincerely apologize.)

Password issues: In the right-hand column, under the User Login section, there's a "Request new password" link.  As long as you know your username/email address, you can ask the system to reset your password.  Very simple and easy.  If that's not working for some strange reason, email us for help/support (info at this website's URL).

If you've forgotten your username and password, email us for help/support (info at this website's URL).

To summarize:  If you can't log in, and you can't fix it on your own, email "info" at this website's URL and we'll happily help you out.

Sixth Starting Group for New Players?

Over on the Inevitable forums at BoardGame Geek, a player posted the following:

"If this is your first time playing, remove all the Groups except ACME, the Church, the Famous International Playboys, the Living Dead, and the Time Travelers. Distribute one of these randomly to each player, and give everyone a playing piece that corresponds to their Group."

Got it, but what if your first time playing involves 6 players?

This is a really good question.  Here's what I wrote as a response:

Wow! That's a great question. My knee-jerk reaction was to pick The Faces In The Crowd, but that's not a good choice, since half of their special power just isn't very good with that particular group mix.

UPS is a good pick, since they're not too complex to understand, are a strong group, and have fun synergy withACME.

I just read through the group list and the other good picks for a sixth group are The Child ProdigiesMafia, and Mental Patients. Including UPS in that mix, I'd pick The Child Prodigies if you're pretty experienced gamers. Otherwise, I'd pick the Mafia, since they're a combat group and will off-set the Living Dead well.

Great question!

Now, of course, none of these groups are available in the Free Demo version.  They're only available in the Standard and Deluxe sets.  If you're stuck with the Free Demo version and you really, really want to play with six players, I'd duplicate the Time Travelers.  Not only does their power duplicate well, without causing any odd cross-power interactions, but it's easy to metaphysically justify their duplication as a time-cloning incident.

Fake FAQ

If you're here, you have questions.  No-one's actually submitted any new user questions yet, so here are my best guesses as to what you might want to know:

What is Inevitable?

Inevitable is a board game.

Could you provide a little more detail?

Sure!  Inevitable is a humorous vehicle for social commentary, disguised as an immersive two-to-three hour boardgame experience for two to six players.  Inevitable takes place in The City – the last bastion of humanity in a post-apocalyptic future.  The City was created and is ruled by The Clone Police and HappyCOM-9 – savior of humanity.  Unfortunately, HappyCOM-9 has gone completely insane.  It's megalomaniacal, cruel, and soulless.  HappyCOM-9 has decreed that there will be an election.  As the champion of one of the twenty most influential groups in The City, your goal is to increase your Power, Influence, and Intelligence to become strong, popular, and smart enough to accrue more votes than HappyCOM-9.

What games is Inevitable like?

I created a GeekList on Boardgame Geek (BGG) to answer this question:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/60740/inevitable-inspirations-etc-

The quick summary is that the theme feels similar to Paranoia (the classic RPG), the cutthroat nature of Inevitable evokes Illuminati, and the general method and structure of play parallels Talisman.  Please check out the BGG link (above) if these references don't make sense to you.

How many players?

You can play Inevitable with two to five players, but it plays best with four.

How long does it take to play?

This depends on whether you're playing a short game or a long game, how many players are playing, what groups the players have, how experienced the players are, and how nasty you're being to each other.  That last part – how nasty you are to each other – has a huge impact on game length.

That said: If you're playing with four experienced players, the short game takes about 1.5 to two hours.  Your first game of Inevitable will probably take three hours or more, since you'll be scouring the Catalog and generally figuring out how everything works.

Is Inevitable appropriate for playing with (my parents, my son/daughter, etc.)?

If the person you're thinking about playing Inevitable with already plays role-playing games, they can handle Inevitable.

Do not be fooled by the colorful "double square" layout of the board: Inevitable is not a "party game," and it is significantly more complex than Monopoly.

During the course of a game of Inevitable, players will encounter or participate in three or more of the following: bribery, slander, blackmail, extortion, russian roulette, dead raccoons, premeditated violence, mugging, zombies, nuclear weapons as a means of personal retaliation, C'thulhu, and murder.  If any of these themes would be inappropriate for the person you want to play Inevitable with, pick something safe, like Pictionary.

How are you distributing Inevitable?

We're distributing Inevitable through the store on our official website: http://inevitablethegame.com/store

Inevitable is available in three versions: A free-to-download print-and-play Demo version.  A pay-to-download Standard version.  A pay-to-purchase professionally-printed boxed set.  All three versions are available through our Store.

If you don't want to download anything right now, but you still want to learn about Inevitable, you can read all of the rules online at: http://inevitablethegame.com/rules
